How my mother Broke the Generation Pattern

A Big Deal for Her

My mother had hip surgery last week. It was a big deal for her.

The last — and only — time she had surgery or was in a hospital was right after I was born, when her appendix was removed. That was deep in the Soviet Union era, and I don’t think it was a pleasant experience.

I am very proud of her for doing this.

She has been limping for about seven years and using a cane for the past three. All three of us children have talked to her about getting it looked at, but she wasn’t ready.

She Wasn’t Ready

Until one day, completely on her own, she made an appointment and called my brother — since the appointment was in the town where he lives — to take her to see the surgeon.

She didn’t tell me about the surgery. My brother did.

Mostly, I think she didn’t want to worry me. That’s what mothers do, I think. (I’m not a mother myself, so I can’t fully confirm.)

I’ll admit, I was a little hurt. Parent-child relationships can be complicated.

I called her a few days before the surgery to talk about it, but she didn’t even want to think about it. Still, she went through with it. And I am incredibly proud of her.

Breaking the Pattern

The hip issue runs in our family. Her mother — my grandmother — had the same problem, but she never addressed it. That just wasn’t the way things were done in her era.

She spent most of her life working under harsh conditions in the Soviet Union, and taking care of oneself simply was not on the agenda.

I work a lot with people’s hips. In the energy field, we say that hips are where we store emotions. And we all carry a lot of emotions living on this Earth. People’s hips usually demand attention eventually.

I am even more proud of my mom because she broke the generational pattern of not taking care of herself.

The Energy of Mothering

Maybe your mom is no longer here. Maybe your relationship with your mom is strained. Maybe you are a mom, and your children are far away, or your relationship with them feels difficult.

Relationships with our parents are some of the biggest karmic lessons and challenges of our lives, I think. I know mine has been.

Whatever your relationship with your mother may be, I hope this coming Sunday — Mother’s Day — you can celebrate the energy of mothering: unconditional love, care, giving, and hopefully receiving, too.

Maybe you notice the energy of Mother Nature caring for us every day — the sun rising, the trees turning green around us.

Whatever it is, simply being here on this Earth is a blessing.

Openings This Weekend

If caring for yourself — or the mothers in your life — is on your mind right now, I have a few openings this weekend.

I have an 11 a.m. opening available this Saturday, and 10 a.m. and noon openings on Sunday if you would like to treat yourself or the mom in your life.

You can book your appointment here:

Or purchase a gift card — also great for a last-minute gift, or perhaps a gentle hint to your loved ones about what you might want yourself. The gift card option is available at the same link above.

Much Love

My mother is doing great. She is back home now.

I’ll call her today to check on her. She lives in a time zone seven hours ahead of me, so sometimes I really have to plan these things in advance.
