My Watermelon Addiction: An Ayurvedic Summer Lesson for Staying Cool on Cape Cod
One of my favorite things about living on Cape Cod is how the changing seasons remind me to slow down. Nature has a way of teaching balance—something Ayurveda has been reminding us of for thousands of years.
A Summer Story
Wow... summer really is here. After two days of rain, the beach this morning was absolute perfection.
One of my favorite things about living on Cape Cod is watching the seasons change. The ocean, the gardens, the humidity, the sunshine—they all remind me that nature is constantly shifting. According to Ayurveda, we shift with it.
A few weeks ago, during our last heat spell, I started having the strongest craving for watermelon. It got to the point where it was all I could think about. One morning before work, I stopped at the grocery store and probably ate half of it in one sitting.
The interesting thing about watermelon is that, in Ayurveda, it is considered one of the most cooling summer foods. It naturally helps cool the body while providing water and minerals. It made me wonder how often our bodies already know what we need—we just don't always recognize the signals.
Summer Ayurveda: Working With the Season
One of the things I love about Ayurveda is that it teaches us to work with nature instead of against it.
As we move into the warmer months on Cape Cod, our bodies naturally experience more heat. Rather than fighting that, Ayurveda encourages us to make small seasonal adjustments that support balance—choosing lighter foods, slowing our pace, staying hydrated, and giving our nervous system opportunities to rest.
I've put together a free guide with some of my favorite Summer Health Hacks inspired by Ayurveda.

Like Increases Like
One of the core principles of Ayurveda is that like increases like, while opposites restore balance.
If life is already busy, it's very easy to keep being busy. Busy creates more busy.
The same happens with heat. Heat creates more heat.
My watermelon craving happened to lead me toward something cooling. But had I not experienced that before, maybe I would have reached for salty snacks, heavier foods, alcohol, or spicy meals instead. While those choices can feel satisfying in the moment, Ayurveda teaches that they often create even more internal heat and require more effort from digestion.
I find this principle fascinating because it extends far beyond food.
Noticing the Patterns
When I'm busy, my natural tendency is to stay busy.
Slowing down has to become a conscious choice.
The same is true with stress. Our nervous system often gets accustomed to constant activity, and we don't always notice how activated we've become until we intentionally create space to pause.
As someone who offers therapeutic massage, Ayurvedic wellness, energy healing, and nervous system support on Cape Cod, I see this every week. We become so used to carrying tension that it starts to feel normal.
I also know that during summer I sleep better when I eat lighter meals and reduce heavier foods like lots of cheese or rich meats. Those small choices make a noticeable difference in how I feel.
I'm sharing this simply as an invitation to notice.
Where in your own life might "like" be increasing "like"?
What opposite quality might help bring you back into balance?
Sometimes one small change is enough to shift how we feel.
Bringing More Balance Into Summer
Whether that's taking an evening walk on the beach, eating more seasonal fruits, receiving a therapeutic massage, practicing Ayurveda, or simply giving yourself permission to slow down, these small choices support long-term healing and a more resilient nervous system.
